Historic Building of the Maritime Customs
This building was inaugurated on October 16th, 1902, This building is considered as a pride monument for the Port of Tampico. This elegant building was originally built over a narrow fringe separating the Panuco and Tamesi rivers. Its construction began at the end of 1898 by expressed orders of the President ofMexico Don Porfirio Díaz, who was personally in charge to order it by catalogue from Europe. Its a two story building formed with pre-manufactured architectonic elements of wrought iron and red brick brought from England, In other words it is a great display of the industrial architecture of the end of the century. This building has a lobby where two national emblems representing two Porfirian eagles made with Venetian tiles, a gift from the government of Italy. The handrails of the building are made of bronze and were brought from Franceas well as the columns and the iron used in the windows. Most of the wood covering the frames of the doors and windows was brought from Louisiana, USA. And the quarry forming the arches is from the Huasteca area. All materials are original except the roof and the floor, which were replaced during the restoration of the building by the Secretary of Revenue Services (Hacienda) and National Institute of Anthropology and History. |
