The lighthouse

Regarding the lightning of the port, Tampico has a lighthouse built In the plains of thesand bank, located on the left margin of the Panuco River, at about 500 meters from the mouth of the river, its geographical location is 22 degrees 16 minutes north latitude and 98 degrees 2 minutes West length from the Greenwich meridian.

The first studies previous to the construction of a lighthouse were initiated in 1879, when the Engineer Lavit was commissioned by the Secretary of Public Works to find out which was the best place to build a localization light for the port of Tampico. From the study carried out by the above mentioned engineer, it showed that the most favorable places were: Mount Andonegui, The center of the stones and the plains of the sand bank; although the first two places were at 25 and 30 meters above the sea level, were discarded due to the topographical obstacles which would make that lightning very dimmed by the distance due to the fact that these locations are 6 km away from the mouth of the river. That’s why it was decided to build the lighthouse on the plains of the sand bank. Since the selected site was formed by sandy terrain, lacking resistance, it was necessary to build the lighthouse over a system of hexagonal pilings, measuring8.2 meterswide, which cost the amount of 16,500 Mexican pesos. The lightning produced by the lighthouse of the Port of Tampico is composed by a group of three white sparkles every second. It is a second typelighthouse, it has a luminous intensity of 36 units of 100 lamps. The reachable distance in a clear day is 55 maritime milesand its geographical reach is 18 miles. In addition on both sides of the Rubble-mound groin lightning buoys were built, which were destroyed by the strong winds of the north that constantly blow in this coast, since they were built on very light bases regarding the strength of the elements to which they were going to be exposed. Lightning buoys were used on the North Rubble-mound groin and another in the south Rubble-mound groin. Nowadays the vessel lining service is done through two lamps located on the ground in the left bank of the Panuco river, with three different lights of40, 100 and 200 watts respectively which have provided good results, It is impossible to provide more data about this issues for the reasons previously mentioned.
